How to use AV equipment

Booking equipment, including costs

The Audio Visual Unit provides, maintains and upgrades audio visual facilities in the teaching spaces at UWA.

We assist staff and students through:

  • The provision and maintenance of audio-visual equipment in Central Teaching Facilities (CTFs)
  • Short-term hire of audio-visual equipment for UWA staff and guild clubs
  • Advice on the purchasing and installation of related technology to University departments
  • A basic video and audio media editing and copying service.

Services

Support for academic lectures

For undergraduate teaching in central teaching facilities (CTFs) the Audio Visual Unit will provide set equipment such as data projectors, overhead projectors and visualisers as a free-of-charge service provided the correct booking procedure is adhered to and sufficient notice is given. The Audio Visual Unit also maintains such equipment already installed in CTFs.

If an audio visual problem occurs during a lecture or a user requires assistance, they should contact the Audio Visual Unit helpdesk on extension 2026. (Most lecture theatres are equipped with telephones.)

When the AV helpdesk receives a request for assistance, instruction on rectifying the problem may be given over the phone, or the helpdesk may be able to do so remotely (the majority of calls for assistance can be resolved in this way). If the problem cannot be resolved quickly in this manner the helpdesk will dispatch the nearest available assistant immediately. If the assistant is unable to rectify the problem promptly he/she will call for assistance from the Audio Visual Technician.

Audio Visual staff will provide emergency assistance during lectures as the highest priority.

The Audio Visual Unit is not responsible for cleaning white boards, chalk boards or overhead projector rolls. These duties are carried out by the cleaning staff.

Maintenance requests for non-AV equipment such as lighting and clocks should be directed to Campus Management (extension 2025).

Staff requiring assistance or instruction in the use of audio visual equipment should arrange this with the Audio Visual Unit prior to their lecture.

In-person standby technical support for events in lecture theatres may be requested, however this is subject to staff availability (sufficient notice must be given) and is chargeable at an hourly rate.

Support for non-central teaching facilities

The Audio Visual Unit provides a limited support service for faculty/school teaching facilities but it should be noted that support in central teaching facilities will always receive priority.

If the Audio Visual Unit is required to provide equipment to non-central teaching venues, then the correct booking procedure must be adhered to and sufficient notice given. A hire fee applies for this service.

University Theatres are responsible for all non-academic activities in the Octagon Theatre and Winthrop Hall.

The Audio Visual Unit may be requested to diagnose faults and/or repair faculty/school AV equipment. This will be undertaken only if staff work loads permit and the faculty/school is willing to pay the appropriate charge for parts and labour.
